What is the Uno Card Curse?
Sean Strickland and Rose Namajunas are the biggest upset fighters in MMA history. These are the kinds of fighters people constantly doubt right up until they win again. Everyone expected Strickland to lose versus Adesanya and Khamzat, but we all know how that went. Rose Namajunas was supposed to lose to Joanna J?drzejczyk and Zhang Weili, but she knocked both out. Aside from bad judge calls, the results are in. They both have something I like to call the Uno Card Curse. This class of fighter never tends to be a good reigning champion. They tend to lose the belt fast.
The biggest storyline going into the event was Sean Strickland facing Khamzat Chimaev. Chimaev had once again been pushed as this unstoppable force who was supposedly about to dominate another division. The UFC has done this for years with certain fighters. They build them into monsters before they actually prove consistency against elite competition over time. I like the hype around Khamzat. I love the way he carries himself and his work ethic. It's all good for the sport, but there always comes a time for the hype to prove itself. I'm convinced of his potential, but he's not matching the hype. For example, his test fight with Kamaru Usman was a flop. He didnt show the dominance the hype told us about. In fact, he showed fatigue. The Dricus du Plessis fight seemed desperate. It showed no variety, and it also showed variety is not needed. But was it entertaining? And why are you watching grown mean beat each other up at the end of your day? Entertainment?
